[ubuntu] Compiz wont work

I have the Advanced Desktop Effects Settings installed, however, when I go to it and play around with the options then close out of it, it doesn't take effect. So I ran a compiz check on my system which returned the below info. Any idea why compiz won't work on my system? Is it because of Nvidia? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Gathering information about your system...

Distribution: Ubuntu 8.04
Desktop environment: Xfce
Graphics chip: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200] (rev a1)
Driver in use: nvidia
Rendering method: Nvidia

Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system...

Checking for texture_from_pixmap... [ OK ]
Checking for non power of two support... [ OK ]
Checking for comp 1f40 osite extension... [FAIL]
Checking for FBConfig... [ OK ]
Checking for hardware/setup problems... [SKIP]

At least one check had to be skipped:
Error: Could not check the amount of memory on your Nvidia chip.
